Many a times parents would encounter the problem of children skipping school without their knowledge. The news is total devastating, leaving you fuming with anger and distrust. But, it is very important to stay calm and poised in this difficult time. Your child is going through a lot himself and he need your help and support at this time, more than anything else.
Today, my husband got a call in the morning that my teenager son skipped school yesterday with three of his friends. They did not board the school bus but met near school and then went out. They asked us to report to the school fast. Calmly, my husband called me to update of the same, leaving me in a fit of rage. Immediately, I called my son, who was at home for exam preparations. While my husband tried to reason out with him, I started shouting, leaving him whimpering like a pup.
Gradually, I controlled myself and after talking to him calmly, the truth came out. They went out to have some fun...and came back home at school time.
Even though I was very angry with him, my husband told me, "It is not a crime, handle him calmly." The environment at school was pathetic, with teachers behaving as if these children were criminals. They interrogated each child separately and cross-checked with what they said. They even went to the extent of making the child write that day's activities on paper, to have a solid proof against them. Disgusting I would say!
That was the time I realised my child is alone is this world, if I do not give him my support now. He might indulge in similar activities in future if I do not lend a shoulder to him this time. So, I stood with him like a rock and the teacher asked me to write an undertaking that my child will not repeat this in future, which I actually did. Nobody knows my child more than me and I have to be there for him.
He has learnt his lesson and it is good that it was just the beginning...he is still a child and will learn from his mistakes. And yes, we all have bunked classes in college. The difference is that the child bunked school and I think times are changing and with so much exposure around, children are lured into adulthood pretty early.
Remember, your child needs help more than you need help. Be with your child and mould him into a good human.
